Día de los Muertos at Austin College

The Austin College La Familia and the Spanish Language House commemorated the Mexican holiday, Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead by creating altars at the Johnson Gallery to memorialize Vanessa Guillen, those who had lost their lives from Covid-19, and the honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

When arriving at the Johnson Gallery, visitors will be greeted by a board decorated with two ofrendas explaining the purpose of this holiday.

To the left sits, an altar for the honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She died on September 18, 2020, and was known for being a champion for gender equality and being the second woman to be appointed as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
On the right side of the gallery, directly facing RBG’s altar is Vanessa Guillen’s altar. Vanessa Guillen died tragically on April 22, 2020 after being killed by a fellow soldier. Her death serves as a spark for the prevention of sexual harassment and assault in the U.S. army.
At the end of the gallery, visitors can see an altar of those who died from the Covid-19 virus.
